Hercules is a small West County city with one very large employer: Bio-Rad Laboratories.
The city’s 2025 financial report counts about 2,000 people at Bio-Rad, which makes and sells equipment and supplies for life science research and clinical labs. That is two thirds of the jobs at the city’s ten largest employers put together, so Hercules is one of the better places in the county for lab, manufacturing, quality, warehouse and office roles in life sciences. Pacific BioLabs, a testing lab, adds more of the same.
The rest of the list is a mix: West Contra Costa Unified’s schools, Home Depot, Safeway and Lucky, a Contra Costa County social services office, a healthcare provider, and a tool and die casting business. Hercules has no BART station, and I-80 is the main route in and out.
