Federal jobs are some of the steadiest work in the county, and they are posted somewhere most job seekers never look: USAJOBS, the federal government’s own job site.
To make them easier to find, ContraCostaJobs brings in federal openings in Contra Costa County every day, along with remote federal jobs anyone in the county can apply for. You can browse them on our Federal Jobs page or on the main job board.
Who is hiring
The agencies change week to week. Right now the largest numbers of openings on our board come from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Veterans Health Administration, and many federal listings are fully remote.
How a federal application is different
Every federal job is applied for on USAJOBS, not on our site. The apply button on each listing takes you to the announcement. A few things catch people out:
- The federal resume is longer. Federal hiring staff look for each qualification in the posting, so list your duties, dates and hours per week in detail. A one-page resume often gets screened out.
- Read the “Qualifications” section first. It says exactly what experience or education counts, and your resume needs to show it in plain words.
- Watch the closing date. Some announcements close in a few days, or once a set number of people apply.
- Answer the questionnaire accurately and back it up. If you rate yourself an expert in something, the resume has to show where.
Keep up with new openings
New federal jobs appear on ContraCostaJobs the day after they are posted. Set up a job alert with the kind of work you want, and you will hear about new listings without checking every day.
If you are coming from federal work and want to move into state or local government, our Online Job Resources page lists the county, city and school district job sites.
