Jobs at BART, EBMUD and the County Hospital: How Each One Hires

BART, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and the county’s health system are three of the big public employers that Contra Costa residents work for. All three post on governmentjobs.com, but each hires a little differently. Here is how, with pay from postings we read on October 2, 2026.

BART

BART posts its jobs on its careers page. You add the jobs you want to a “Job Basket” and apply to them together. You can attach a resume, but BART says you still have to fill in the online application for each job. Help is at (510) 464-6112 or employment@bart.gov.

The best known entry-level job is Station Agent. BART’s last part-time Station Agent posting, from October 2025, shows how it works:

  • Pay: $43.55 to $51.23 an hour.
  • Requirements: a high school diploma or GED, four years of face-to-face customer service with large and varied groups of people, a California driver’s license with a good record, and willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Selection: a screen for minimum qualifications, then possibly a skills test, a written exam and an interview, and a pre-employment medical exam with a drug and alcohol screen.
  • Speed: it filled a pool for the next 12 months and closed after 1,000 applications or two weeks, whichever came first.

That last point matters. Popular BART jobs can close early, so set up alerts and apply the day a posting opens. Some postings, such as a recent Train Operator posting, have been open to current BART employees only.

Skilled jobs open to outside applicants on October 2 included electronic technicians and a structures welder at $90,632 to $118,473 a year.

EBMUD

EBMUD supplies water to much of western and central Contra Costa. It takes applications only online, through its job page, and only while a job is open. Its own FAQ lays out the path:

  • Apply, and show you meet the minimum qualifications.
  • Pass the exam, which can include an application review, written and performance tests and interviews.
  • Get placed on a hiring list. The whole process takes from two weeks to six months, depending on the job.
  • Stay on the list for 12 to 24 months, until you are hired, ask to go inactive, or turn down two offers.

To hear about a job when it opens, go to EBMUD’s Job Descriptions page, pick the job titles and click Subscribe. You get an email every time one opens, for 12 months. EBMUD’s Recruitment Division is at 510-287-0735. On October 2 it was hiring a Water Treatment Operator at $116,892 to $128,868 a year, along with engineers.

The county hospital and health system

Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez and the county’s health centers are run by the county, so their jobs are posted with all other county jobs at governmentjobs.com/careers/contracosta, under the Health Services department. Our guide to getting a job with Contra Costa County covers the application, tests and lists.

Many health jobs are marked “Continuous”, which means applications are taken all the time. Open on October 2:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant: $49,923 to $60,682 a year.
  • Registered Dental Assistant: $59,604 to $72,449.
  • Orthopedic Technician: $54,435 to $69,516.
  • Registered Nurse, across many units: $155,796 to $194,569.
  • Physical, occupational and imaging technologist jobs from about $104,000 up.

What all three have in common

  • The application is the resume. Fill in every job with dates, hours and duties, because that is what gets screened.
  • Alerts beat luck. Each one lets you subscribe to job titles, and some postings close early.
  • Expect a test and a list. Plan on weeks to months between applying and an offer.
