How to Get a Job With the City of Concord

Concord is the largest city in Contra Costa County, and the City of Concord itself hires for police, recreation, maintenance, engineering, planning and office work. Here is how it hires, using postings open on October 2, 2026.

Where the jobs are

The city posts every opening on its job page on governmentjobs.com, linked from cityofconcord.org/jobs. You apply online, and the city says only materials submitted online during the filing period are accepted.

What it pays

  • Part-time recreation jobs such as Lifeguard/Swim Instructor ($17.22 to $19.48 an hour), Facility Attendant ($17.22 to $20.47), Preschool Aide/Teacher ($17.22 to $27.52) and Assistant Pool Manager/Pool Manager ($21.50 to $24.93).
  • Seasonal food service and facilities jobs at Camp Concord, which the city runs.
  • Community Service Officer: $32.55 to $41.54 an hour ($67,704 to $86,403 a year).
  • Police Dispatcher II (lateral): $97,552 to $124,509 a year.
  • Police Officer: $125,008 to $151,965 a year.

How the selection process works

The Community Service Officer posting lays out a typical process:

  • Apply online and answer the supplemental questions. The city warns that incomplete answers, false statements or omissions can disqualify you, and your answers have to be backed up by your application.
  • Competitive screening. Applications are compared, and only the strongest are invited to the next step.
  • Panel interview. If you are invited and cannot make it, the city says it cannot reschedule.
  • Hiring list. People who pass are ranked on a list that departments hire from.

Office jobs often need a typing certificate. Our typing certificates page lists what Concord accepts and where to test for free.

A route into policing: Police Officer Trainee

Concord hires Police Officer Trainees and sends them through a state POST-approved academy. Getting into the academy, which includes passing a POST written exam, is a condition of the job. Trainees are paid $31.91 an hour while in the academy, as temporary employees, and on graduating become sworn officers at the full officer salary and benefits.

Not ready for that? The Community Service Officer job handles calls, reports, property and parking enforcement without making arrests, and can be a step toward police work.

Tips

  • Start with part-time recreation work if you are new. It is city experience that counts on your next application.
  • Treat the supplemental questions as part of the test. Give specific examples that your work history supports.
  • Many postings are continuous, so you can apply any time, but the best candidates move first.
