How To Repair Asphalt Cracks

Posted on

Asphalt cracks are inevitable. Not only did they look unsightly, but they can also compromise the structural integrity of your asphalt. Of course, if your asphalt is commonly walked on, you also need to worry about safety issues. Regardless, you probably want to repair asphalt cracks as soon as possible. The longer they go ignored, the more expensive and time consuming it is to fix them. But, if you fix them soon, while they're still small, you can easily do it with asphalt crack repair liquid. This article explains how to use asphalt crack repair liquid.

What You Need

Asphalt crack filler liquid is sold in large jugs at most home improvement stores. It is premixed, so it is very convenient and easy to use. All you really need for the job, besides the product, is a squeegee and old shoes. The job is even easier if you have a full-size squeaky broom. They make it easier if you need to patch a lot of cracks because you don't need to bend down so much. This ultimately makes the job much less exhausting.

How to Prep the Asphalt

You need to do a little bit of preparation work before pouring the crack filler. First, you need to sweep the crack thoroughly. However, this might not get all the dirt that is stuck deep inside the crack. A wet/dry hose vacuum works best for sucking the dirt out of the crack. Once the crack is clean, you can get out the crack filler.

How to Apply the Crack Filler

The key to applying crack filler is basically to pour it onto the damaged area and then spread it around with a squeegee. It might take some time to get used to using the squeegee. A simple rubber squeegee push broom makes it easier because you don't need to bend down. You can poor the liquid directly into the crack until it starts to overflow. You want to immediately use the squeegee to taper down the edges of the liquid before it dries. At first, the filler might seem difficult to manipulate, but take your time and be patient. If there are any severe edges that stick out, you can easily sand them down after the filler dries.

As you can see, asphalt crack filler is easy to use. If you properly apply it, the cracks will be safer and less visible.
